Each year, the Joongang Daily publishes its list of South Korea’s top universities. How did Korean universities fare in this year’s assessment?

In October, the Joongang Daily published its 2013 University Assessment, or “2013 대학평가”. Here are some highlights from this year’s rankings:

  • Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) climbed to number one, taking that spot from The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), which had been ranked number one since 2008
  • Seoul National University (SNU) fell from 4th to 5th place, while Sangkyunkwan University (SKKU) rose to 3rd and Korea University rose to 4th. This is the first time since the assessment’s inception in 1994 that SKKU and Korea University have ranked above SNU.
  • SNU and Yonsei University tied for 5th place

Joongang Daily Assessment Method

Since 1994, the Korean daily newspaper Joongang Ilbo has published an annual assessment of four-year universities in Korea. For 2013, 100 universities were reviewed according to four criteria, with a total of 300 possible points: faculty research (100 points), education and financial conditions (90 points), reputation and alumni networks (60 points), and internationalization (50 points).

  • "Faculty research" criteria include number of faculty publications, citations of faculty papers, amount of research funding, intellectual property registration, and technology transfer. The highest rated university in this category for 2013 was POSTECH (85.13 out of 100 points).
  • "Education and financial conditions" criteria include faculty-student ratio, book purchases, open courseware, and other student indicators. The highest rated university in this category for 2013 was KAIST (79.22 out of 90 points).
  • "Reputation and alumni networks" criteria include employment rate of graduates, alumni donations, and other social indicators. The highest rated university in this category for 2013 was Seoul National University (54.9 out of 60 points).
  • "Internationalization" criteria include diversity of foreign student population and percentages of foreign faculty, foreign students, exchange students, and courses in English. The highest rated university in this category for 2013 was Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (41.99 out of 50 points).

International Rankings

A number of Korean universities have placed highly in international rankings. The three most influential and widely regarded international university rankings are the QS World University Rankings, the Times Higher Education World Rankings, and the Academic Ranking of World Universities.

The QS World University Rankings, published by the British Company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), score universities according to academic peer review, faculty-student ratio, citations per faculty, recruiter review, and international orientation.

  • Six Korean universities placed in the QS Top 200 University Rankings in 2013:
    Seoul National University (35th)
    KAIST (60th)
    POSTECH (107th)
    Yonsei University (114th)
    Korea University (145th)
  • QS also publishes a region-specific Top 50 Asian University Rankings, in which South Korean universities were well represented in 2013:
    Seoul National University (4th)
    KAIST (6th)
    POSTECH (7th)
    Yonsei University (16th)
    Korea University (19th)
    Sungkyunkwan University (21st)
    Kyung Hee University (35th)
    Hanyang University (36th)
    Ewha Womans University (40th)

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings, published by the British magazine Times Higher Education, score universities according to industry income (innovation), international diversity, teaching (learning environment), research (volume, income, and reputation), and citations (research influence).

  • Four Korean universities placed in the 2013 World University Rankings’ top 200:
    Seoul National University (44th)
    KAIST (56th)
    POSTECH (60th)
    Yonsei University (190th)
  • Like QS, Times Higher Education also publishes an Asia University Rankings, with 6 South Korean universities in its top 50:
    POSTECH (5th)
    Seoul National University (8th)
    KAIST (10th)
    Yonsei University (20th)
    Sungkyunkwan University (23rd)
    Korea University (28th)

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai Ranking, is published by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University and scores universities according to a set of entirely academic and research-oriented criteria: alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Field Medals, faculty citations, and articles published in the journals Nature and Science. Among Korean universities, only Seoul National University ranked in the ARWU’s top 200, placing in the 101-150 category (ARWU doesn’t provide detailed rankings after 100th place).
